How the barred lists work
The Children's Barred List is usually added when you teach, train, coach, care for or supervise under-18s once a week or more, on 4 or more days in any 30-day period, or overnight (between 2am and 6am). Less often than that, you'll usually get an Enhanced check without it.

Sports & Fitness DBS check FAQs
Can a self-employed sports coach get an Enhanced DBS check?
Yes. Freelance coaches who work with under-18s can apply for their own Enhanced check through a registered Umbrella Body.
Will my check include the Children's Barred List?
Usually, if you coach under-18s once a week or more, on 4 or more days in any 30-day period, or overnight, such as on residential camps.
My club runs its own checks. Do I need one too?
Not always. If you only coach for that club, its check may be enough. If you also coach privately or for other clubs, having your own check on the Update Service saves repeat applications.
I'm a PT who only trains adults. Am I eligible?
Usually not for an Enhanced check, unless your clients are vulnerable adults. A Basic check may be what you need.
How do I show my check to clubs and parents?
Join the Update Service and share your certificate number. They can check it's current online, for free, with your permission.
