A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check. For yoga and Pilates instructors, the relevance depends on who you teach and in what setting.
If you teach exclusively to able-bodied adults in studio or gym settings, a DBS check is not legally required. However, if you teach children’s yoga, chair yoga for elderly or vulnerable adults, yoga in care homes, schools, or therapeutic settings, you may be carrying out regulated activity and an Enhanced DBS check may be appropriate.
A Basic DBS check is available to anyone and is a good professional credential for client-facing work. An Enhanced DBS check is needed only if your work involves children or vulnerable adults on a regular basis.
It depends on your client base and teaching setting. The legal requirement for a DBS check is triggered by regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults, not by the activity itself.
You likely need an Enhanced DBS check if you teach children’s yoga or Pilates classes regularly, deliver sessions in schools, teach in care homes or day centres, or provide one-to-one sessions with vulnerable adults.
You probably only need a Basic DBS check (or none at all) if you teach general adult classes in studios, gyms, or community centres, or run corporate wellness sessions with no vulnerable participants.

For instructors who only teach general adult classes, this change has no direct impact. Read more in our guide to DBS changes in 2025 and 2026.
