Most self-employed sports coaches need an Enhanced DBS check. This is the highest level of standard check available. It searches for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and any relevant police intelligence held locally. If your coaching role involves regulated activity with under-18s, the check will also include a search of the Children’s Barred List.
A sports coach DBS check is not just a formality. Parents expect it. Clubs and leisure centres require it before they will let you use their facilities. National governing bodies across football, tennis, cricket, rugby, swimming, and athletics all recommend or mandate DBS checks for coaches working with juniors. Without one, you limit where and with whom you can work.

Do Self-Employed Sports Coaches Need a DBS Check?
If you coach children or vulnerable adults in any sport, yes. It does not matter whether you run private one-to-one sessions, small group training, holiday camps, or after-school clubs. This applies across every discipline. A self-employed football coach running junior training needs one. Before 21 January 2026, self-employed sports coaches had no way to apply for an Enhanced DBS check on their own. The only option was a Basic DBS check, which shows unspent convictions only. It does not reveal spent convictions, cautions, police intelligence, or whether someone appears on the Children’s Barred List.
That created a significant gap. A self-employed football coach or tennis coach could be working privately with children without any meaningful background check, because the system that existed simply did not allow self-employed individuals to access the Enhanced level. If you had no employer or club to countersign the application, you were locked out.
A Statutory Instrument laid before Parliament on 20 November 2025 changed this. It amended Part V of the Police Act 1997 and came into force on 21 January 2026. Since that date, paid self-employed workers in England and Wales can now apply for Enhanced DBS checks through a registered platform.
For self-employed sports coaches, this means you can now get the same level of check that an employed coach at a school or sports club would have. You apply through a registered platform, verify your identity online, and receive your Enhanced DBS certificate directly. The gap is closed.
What Type of DBS Check Does a Sports Coach Need?
The type of DBS check you need as a sports coach depends on who you are coaching and the nature of the role.
If you coach children or young people under 18, you will need an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check. This is the standard requirement for anyone carrying out regulated activity with children, which includes teaching, training, instructing, or supervising under-18s on a regular basis.
If you coach vulnerable adults, for example running adapted sports sessions or rehabilitation programmes, an Enhanced DBS check with an Adults’ Barred List check applies.
If your coaching is exclusively with adults who are not classed as vulnerable, a lower-level check may be sufficient. But this is uncommon in practice. Most sports coaches work with at least some juniors, and most facilities, clubs, and governing bodies expect an Enhanced check regardless.
