DBS Checks for Speech & Language Therapists

Self-employed speech and language therapists (SALTs) in England and Wales can now apply for an Enhanced DBS check online.

What Is a DBS Check for Speech and Language Therapists?

A DBS check is a criminal record check. For speech and language therapists, it is required because you work closely with children and vulnerable adults, often in one-to-one settings. Schools, NHS trusts, and private clients all require a current Enhanced DBS certificate.

Most self-employed SALTs need an Enhanced DBS check with the Children’s Barred List, as the majority of speech therapy work involves children.

Do Self-Employed Speech Therapists Need a DBS Check?

Yes. Speech therapy involves regular one-to-one contact with children and vulnerable adults. This is regulated activity regardless of the setting.

Schools, NHS trusts, and private clients will not engage a SALT without a current DBS certificate. HCPC registration is separate and does not replace it.
