DBS Checks for Physiotherapists

Self-employed physiotherapists in England and Wales can now apply for an Enhanced DBS check online, without needing an employer or agency to process the application.

What Is a DBS Check for Physiotherapists?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check. For physiotherapists, it is a standard requirement for working in NHS settings, private clinics, and with vulnerable patients. The HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) requires registrants to declare criminal convictions, but a DBS check provides independent verification.

Most self-employed physiotherapists need an Enhanced DBS check with the appropriate Barred List check, as physiotherapy involves regular physical contact with vulnerable patients.

Do Self-Employed Physiotherapists Need a DBS Check?

Yes. If you provide physiotherapy to patients on a regular basis, you are carrying out regulated activity. NHS trusts, GP practices, sports clubs, and private clinics all require physiotherapists to hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate.

HCPC registration is not a substitute for a DBS check. They serve different purposes.

What Changed in January 2026?

Until 21 January 2026, self-employed physiotherapists relied on employers or agencies to process DBS applications. From 21 January 2026, self-employed healthcare professionals can apply independently through a registered platform.

This is particularly useful for physiotherapists who work across multiple clinics and NHS trusts. Read more in our guide to DBS changes in 2025 and 2026.

What Type of DBS Check Does a Physiotherapist Need?

Enhanced DBS with Adults’ Barred List for most physiotherapists treating adult patients. Enhanced DBS with Children’s Barred List for paediatric physiotherapists. Both Barred Lists if you treat both populations.

Do physiotherapists need a DBS check?

Yes. NHS trusts and private clinics require physiotherapists to hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate, separate from HCPC registration.

No. HCPC registration confirms your qualifications and fitness to practise. A DBS check confirms your criminal record status. Both are required.

Not with the DBS Update Service. Each clinic can verify your existing certificate online.

Adults’ Barred List for adult patients, Children’s Barred List for paediatric work, or both if you treat both populations.

Yes. From January 2026, self-employed physiotherapists can apply independently through a registered platform.

If you work with young athletes regularly, an Enhanced DBS check with Children’s Barred List is appropriate.

No official expiry date. Most NHS trusts expect a certificate less than three years old, or an active DBS Update Service subscription.
