DBS Checks for Photographers

Self-employed photographers can apply for a DBS check, particularly when photographing children at schools, events, or portrait sessions.

What Is a DBS Check for Photographers?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check. For photographers, the level of check depends on who you photograph and how often.

If you work primarily with adult clients, such as weddings, corporate headshots, or product photography, a DBS check is not legally required. However, if you regularly photograph children, whether in schools, at sports events, or for portrait sessions, an Enhanced DBS check may be appropriate.

Schools and event organisers increasingly expect photographers working with children to hold a current DBS certificate before allowing them on site.

Do Self-Employed Photographers Need a DBS Check?

The answer depends on your client base. Photography itself is not regulated activity. However, if your work involves regular, unsupervised access to children, the safeguarding expectation applies.

You likely need an Enhanced DBS check if you regularly photograph children in schools, provide portrait photography of children in private settings, or work at children’s sports clubs, dance shows, or performance events on an ongoing basis.

A Basic DBS check is sufficient for general professional credibility, particularly for wedding and event photographers.

What Changed in January 2026?

The January 2026 law change allows self-employed individuals in regulated activity to apply for Enhanced DBS checks for the first time. For photographers who regularly work with children, this provides an independent route to getting properly vetted.

Basic DBS checks remain available to all photographers through GOV.UK. Read more in our guide to DBS changes in 2025 and 2026.

What Type of DBS Check Does a Photographer Need?

Enhanced DBS with Children’s Barred List if you regularly photograph children in settings where you have unsupervised access.

Basic DBS for general photography work. Available through GOV.UK at £18.

The key test is frequency and the nature of your access to children. Occasional event photography may not meet the regulated activity threshold. Regular school photography almost certainly does.
