DBS Checks for Fitness & Personal Trainers

Self-employed personal trainers and fitness instructors can apply for a DBS check, particularly when training children, young people, or vulnerable adults.

What Is a DBS Check for Personal Trainers?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check. For personal trainers and fitness instructors, the level of check you need depends on who you train.

If you train exclusively able-bodied adults in gyms or outdoor settings, a DBS check is not legally required, though some gyms ask for one. If you train children, young athletes, or vulnerable adults regularly, you are likely carrying out regulated activity and an Enhanced DBS check is appropriate.

CIMSPA (the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) recommends DBS checks for fitness professionals working with vulnerable groups.

Do Self-Employed Personal Trainers Need a DBS Check?

It depends on your client base. The legal threshold for a DBS check is regulated activity, not your job title.

You likely need an Enhanced DBS check if you regularly train under-18s, deliver sessions in schools or youth settings, work with elderly or vulnerable clients in care settings, or provide rehabilitation sessions for vulnerable adults.

A Basic DBS check is sufficient if you train general adult clients and want a professional credential. Many gyms and fitness platforms request one as standard.

What Changed in January 2026?

The January 2026 law change is relevant to personal trainers who work with children or vulnerable adults. Previously, you could only get a Basic DBS check unless an employer sponsored a higher-level application.

From 21 January 2026, self-employed individuals in paid regulated activity can apply for Enhanced DBS checks through a registered platform. If you train young athletes, deliver sessions in schools, or work with vulnerable adults, you can now access the appropriate level of check independently.
