DBS Checks for Music Teachers

Self-employed music teachers, piano teachers, guitar teachers, and singing teachers in England and Wales can now apply for an Enhanced DBS check online.

What Is a DBS Check for Music Teachers?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check that reveals whether someone has convictions, cautions, or other information that could make them unsuitable to work with children.

For self-employed music teachers, whether you teach piano, guitar, violin, drums, singing, or any other instrument, a DBS check is the standard way to demonstrate to parents that you have been vetted and are safe to teach their child. It applies equally to teachers who visit pupils’ homes, those who teach from their own studio, and those who work in schools on a freelance basis.

Most self-employed music teachers who work regularly with children will need an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the Children’s Barred List.

Do Self-Employed Music Teachers Need a DBS Check?

If you teach music to children on a regular, paid basis, whether one-to-one or in groups, you are almost certainly carrying out what is legally defined as regulated activity with children. That means you are eligible for, and should obtain, an Enhanced DBS check with Children’s Barred List.

The threshold is straightforward: if you teach the same child (or group) more than three times within a 30-day period, or once a week, you meet the frequency test for regulated activity. Most private music teachers comfortably exceed this.

Parents expect it. Schools and music hubs require it. And for a self-employed music teacher building a reputation on trust, it is a basic professional credential.

What Changed for Music Teachers in January 2026?

Until 21 January 2026, self-employed music teachers could only apply for a Basic DBS check. This meant that a piano teacher working alone with children in their homes every week could not access the same level of vetting as a teacher employed by a school or music service.

A Basic check only shows unspent convictions. It does not reveal spent convictions, cautions, local police intelligence, or whether someone appears on the Children’s Barred List. For a parent entrusting their child to a private teacher, often unsupervised, a Basic check offered very little reassurance.

A Statutory Instrument laid before Parliament on 30 November 2025 changed this. From 21 January 2026, self-employed individuals in paid regulated activity can apply for Enhanced DBS checks through a registered platform.

For private music teachers, this closes a significant gap. You can now demonstrate the same level of safeguarding as any employed teacher. Read the full story in our guide to DBS changes in 2025 and 2026.

What Type of DBS Check Does a Music Teacher Need?

Enhanced DBS with Children’s Barred List is the appropriate level for most self-employed music teachers who teach children regularly. You qualify if you provide one-to-one or group tuition to children on more than three days within any 30-day period.

This check reveals spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, relevant local police intelligence, and whether you appear on the Children’s Barred List. Read more about what an Enhanced DBS check includes.

Enhanced DBS without Barred List may apply if you only teach adults, or if your contact with children is infrequent and always supervised.

Basic DBS is available to anyone but provides very limited reassurance for parents of young pupils. Basic checks are handled through GOV.UK.

If you teach both children and adults, the level of check is determined by your work with children. Our DBS checks for self-employed people guide explains the eligibility criteria.

How Long Does a DBS Check Take for Music Teachers?

Standard Enhanced DBS checks typically complete within 14 days, though timelines vary depending on the complexity of the check and police force processing times.

We use e-Bulk submission, which means your application is sent electronically to the DBS and processed faster than paper-based applications. If you subscribe to the DBS Update Service, new parents and schools can verify your certificate instantly.

There is no official fast-track route for Enhanced DBS checks. Standard processing times apply. Read more about how long a DBS check takes.

How Much Does a DBS Check Cost for a Music Teacher?

The DBS statutory fee for an Enhanced check is £49.50. This is set by the government and is the same regardless of which platform you use.

You can see a full breakdown of all fees on our DBS check costs for self-employed page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most popular questions we get about DBS Checks and our Platform

Do piano teachers need a DBS check?

Yes. If you teach piano to children on a regular, paid basis, you are carrying out regulated activity and should hold an Enhanced DBS check with Children’s Barred List. This applies equally to guitar, violin, singing, and all other instrument teachers.

If you exclusively teach adults, you do not need an Enhanced DBS check for child safeguarding purposes. A Basic DBS check is available if you want one for professional credibility. If any of your adult pupils are vulnerable, Enhanced may apply.

Yes. From 21 January 2026, self-employed music teachers can apply for Enhanced DBS checks through a registered platform. You no longer need a school, music service, or employer to process the application.

Yes. The DBS check requirement is based on the nature and frequency of your contact with children, not the location. Whether you teach at home, in a studio, or at the pupil’s house, the same rules apply.

Not if you subscribe to the DBS Update Service. Each school can verify your existing certificate online, saving you from reapplying. Some schools may have their own policies, so check with each one.

A DBS certificate has no official expiry date. It is only accurate on the day it is issued. Most schools and parents expect a certificate less than three years old, or an active DBS Update Service subscription.

An Enhanced DBS check can show both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and reprimands. Certain old or minor offences may be filtered under DBS filtering rules. The DBS decides what is disclosed based on the nature and age of the offence.

The Children’s Barred List is maintained by the DBS and contains the names of individuals who are barred from working with children. An Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check confirms you are not on this list.

If the camp involves regular unsupervised contact with children, even on a seasonal basis, an Enhanced DBS check is expected. Most holiday activity providers require it as a condition of engagement.
