A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check. For exam invigilators, it is a safeguarding requirement because you work in schools and exam centres alongside children and young people.
Although invigilators do not teach, you are present in rooms with students, often for extended periods, and may interact with them during exam conditions. Schools treat this as a role requiring safeguarding vetting.
Most exam invigilators will need an Enhanced DBS check. Whether a Children’s Barred List check is required depends on the frequency and nature of your role.
Yes. Schools and exam centres require invigilators to hold a current DBS certificate. If you invigilate regularly, more than three days in any 30-day period, which is common during exam seasons, you are likely in regulated activity.
Even if your invigilation is seasonal rather than year-round, schools will require a DBS check before allowing you to work alongside students.
