DBS Checks for Drama & Performing Arts Teachers

Self-employed drama teachers, performing arts tutors, and theatre workshop leaders in England and Wales can now apply for an Enhanced DBS check online.

What Is a DBS Check for Drama Teachers?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check. For drama teachers and performing arts instructors who work with children and young people, it is a standard safeguarding requirement.

Drama and performing arts often involve emotionally expressive work, physical contact, and working in close settings with young people. Parents, schools, and theatre companies expect teachers to hold a current DBS certificate.

Most self-employed drama teachers working regularly with children will need an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the Children’s Barred List.

Do Self-Employed Drama Teachers Need a DBS Check?

If you teach drama, theatre, or performing arts to children on a regular, paid basis, you are carrying out regulated activity with children. This includes running weekly drama classes, holiday workshops for children, directing youth theatre productions, and providing one-to-one acting coaching to under-18s.

Schools, youth theatres, and arts organisations will not engage a self-employed drama teacher without a current Enhanced DBS certificate.
